The property committee continues to monitor and review the collection of usage data from the camp properties in Iowa, as well as the Program Center located in Rock Island, Illinois. Three complete years (FY14-FY16) of usage data has been collected and summarized in this report and the 2016 report. These reports show the number of individual visits, type of group visits, and quarterly usage.
The property committee continues its commitment to provide properties that are relevant for Girl Scout programs and outdoor camping education and are fiscally sustainable through the best use of GSEIWI’s resources. Camp Liberty in New Liberty, Iowa, has been recently renovated to provide girls with premier outdoor programming.
Be sure to review the Camp and Property Timeline, the 2015-2016 Timeline, and the 2017 Timeline to see the planned activities of the committee. After the timeline, recommendations were made by the property committee and will be taken to the August board of directors meeting.
On Aug. 11, 2016, the board of directors of GSEIWI voted unanimously to sell Camp Tahigwa in Dorchester, Iowa. The decision included the camp be sold in its entirety to an entity with the condition that the land be maintained as a natural space in perpetuity for public use. The board of directors will develop an exploratory letter to the county conservation boards of Fayette, Winneshiek, Clayton and Allamakee along with the Iowa DNR and Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation leaders. The board voted to assign a task group made up of board members to negotiate an agreement for the divestiture of the property with final approval to be determined by the majority of the board of directors, with the understanding that if the negotiations fall through, it goes back to the property committee for further discussion. The board added that the negotiations be completed for final approval by the January 19, 2017 board meeting.
In addition, the board voted to divest 22.2 acres at Camp L-KeeTa that was not being used by girls.
On January 19, 2017, the board of directors of Girl Scouts of Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois voted unanimously to sell Camp Tahigwa in Dorchester, Iowa, to the Department of Natural Resources with the stipulation that the land be permanently maintained as a natural space for public use. The DNR, GSEIWI, and the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation will work together closely throughout this process.
On June 1, 2017, the sale of Camp Tahigwa to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation (INHF) was finalized. Girl Scouts will oversee some work on the property over the summer to fulfill the terms of the contract. The INHF continues to work on the sale with the Iowa DNR, fulfilling the agreement that the land be permanently maintained as a natural space for public use.
GSEIWI remains committed to providing programs and outdoor education that are relevant and fiscally sustainable for girls. We utilize our camps, parks, and naturalized areas throughout the council to offer programs to girls.
